- 1. The issue i chose to research is how effective and popular underage drinking is, and how people have tried to help stop it. Underage drinking is going to happen everywhere no matter how strict the laws are getting, or how different associations try to campaign to stop it, it still is going to happen. However, the articles i chose to research show how how old laws referring to underage drinking are being moderated or even changed, they also show different examples of how people are trying to stop the underage drinking, by coming up with new ideas to help slow the process down. Underage drinking is always going to be an issue that is controversial, especially when it involves the subject of minors. 2. The issue of drinking laws is one that is not only controversial and has been debated over many years, it is also one that is confusing. People have always been interested in the drinking laws because they are always changing, or being moderated. It strikes a specail interest to teenagers especially that are under the age of 21 because young adults are the ones that are getting in the most trouble for it, if they are caught. Young adults under the state wide drinking age postion is if they lowered the drinking age back to 18, then there would be no reason to have to binge drink as much because they are introduced to alcohol at a younger age, like europeans. It is known fact that European teenagers do not feel the need to binge drink because their parents introduce alochol to them at such a young age, they are used to drinking a glass of wine with dinner. Although, most people do not feel that lowering the age of drinking will help with the binge drinking or help lessen underage drinking. 3. A. Position 1. One position concerning underage drinking would have to be the young adults that particpate in it. Young adults, especially teenagers feel the need to rebel against any rules that are presented in front of them, even if it is concerned with being on time with curfew, or turning in an assignemnt on time, so ofcourse they would rebel against not being able to have a beer if they are not 21. Their position is that they are going to not follow the laws and rebel and have drinks even if they are under 21. B. Position 2. Another position would have to come from different associations or organizations that are against underage drinking. An example that i know is very prominent in South Carolina is Mothers Against Drunk Driving, they argue there case that if the process of underage drinking continues more underage children are going to die resulting in a drinking and driving accident. They have put on many fundraisers and classes to teach adults and young adults that underage drinking is no joke, and if it continues in the way it does more people will die. C. Position 3. The last postion would be the governement officials/ law enforcers that have enforced the drinking age for quite some time now. Law enforcers are always on the look-out for underage drinking, and drunk driving. It is there job to teach underage drinkers that this law is no joke, and if you think you are invincible to it, your wrong. Their postion is too keep community's safe, and to keep the under-age drinking to a miniuim number. 4. My personal interest in this particular subject is very strong. While being a young adult in college, i would have to say that i hate that the drinking age is 21, and agree that if the drinking age was lowered there wouldnt be as many binge drinking, poeple dying in drunk driving accidents, or even alochol poisining. However, i do see the postion of the law trying to show that drinking is a privelage and if one is not mature enough to handle the consumption of alochol then the drinking ahe should be higher.

Topic Proposal

Caitlin, your positions, as formulated, are not really position but rather predictions and descriptions. Could make your them more specific? For example, for Position 1 you could specify why these rebellious young people think it is okay to disobey this particular law. Are you completely sure that it is mere spite that motivates the young adults to dislike 21 as the legal drinking age? Could it be that they have some reasons to back up their need to rebel? For Position 2, you should slightly paraphrase the last sentence about that point in your topic proposal, turning it into something along the lines of “ Mothers believe teaching “adults and young adults that underage drinking” may result in XYZ…. But then you would still need to explain how this is relevant to the question of keeping the current legal drinking age at 21! As to Position 3, it would be good if you specified why the government thinks that the law should e enforced at this particular age.
